Address Format for Ecommerce Checkout — A Practical Guide

How to design a checkout address form that works across countries, with field order, validation, and tax caveats.

Checkout is where address mistakes cost money. A rejected card, an undeliverable parcel, or a tax field that shows the wrong rate can all trace back to the address form.

Ask for the country first

The country determines the rest of the form. Ask for it before the street address so the labels and validation can adapt.

Keep billing and shipping separate

Do not copy the shipping address into billing without showing the user. A gift order or a corporate card can legitimately have two different addresses.

Do not promise tax from an address alone

Tax depends on the seller, the product, the destination, and local rules. An address can change the estimate, but it is not the whole calculation.

Questions

Should I use an address autocomplete?+
It can reduce typing, but test the manual path too. Autocomplete can hide the field order and make it harder to correct a wrong suggestion.
How many address lines do I need?+
Two lines cover most cases: street and unit. Add a company or attention field only if your labels and carriers support it.

Examples are synthetic. Do not use a generated address for identity checks, account registration, or delivery.
