Billing Address vs Shipping Address — What the Difference Is

Why checkout asks for two addresses, when they can be the same, and what to do when a billing address fails verification.

A shipping address is where the order goes. A billing address is the address associated with the payment method.

They are often the same, but they do not have to be. The billing address is used by the card issuer for verification, so a mismatch can decline a payment.

What each address is for

The shipping address drives delivery and sometimes tax. The billing address is checked against the card issuer’s records. A gift order can ship to one address while the card bills to another.

Why a billing address fails

The most common causes are a different apartment number, a maiden name, a recently moved card, or a ZIP code typo. Contact the card issuer if the address is current but the checkout keeps failing.

Test both fields

When testing a checkout, use one address for shipping and a different valid-format address for billing. Confirm that the form does not silently copy one into the other and that the review page shows both.

Questions

Can billing and shipping be the same?+
Yes. Most checkouts default to the same address and let you change the shipping address.
Does the billing address have to match the card?+
The card issuer may require it for verification. If it does not match, the payment can be declined.

Examples are synthetic. Do not use a generated address for identity checks, account registration, or delivery.
