Normalizes before judging
Case and spacing are normalized the way each country writes them, so "m5v2t6" and "M5V 2T6" are checked as the same Canadian code.
Says when there is no code
Hong Kong and the UAE have no postal codes. The checker says so and never reports a blank required field as a user error.
One table for every format
The full country table shows each expected pattern and a real example, which is faster than opening 38 separate pages.
Postal Code Format Checker questions
- No. Format checking only proves the string has the right shape for that country. Confirming that a code maps to a real delivery area needs a postal authority dataset, which this page does not call.
- Hong Kong does not use postal codes. The checker reports that explicitly instead of marking an empty field as invalid, because many checkout forms wrongly require one.
- In Italy, France, Finland, and several other countries the leading zeros are part of the code. If your spreadsheet stores the value as a number, 00100 becomes 100 and fails validation. Store postal codes as text.
- The pattern covers the outward code (area letters and digits) and the inward code (digit plus two letters). The letters C, I, K, M, O and V are never used in the area part.
- All 38 countries with an address generator on this site, plus the two that have no postal codes. The table at the bottom lists every supported format and example.
