APO and FPO Address Format — What Civilians Get Wrong

How APO/FPO/DPO addresses work, why the city and state fields look unusual, and what not to change.

By Charlie Simmon ·

APO, FPO, and DPO addresses are military mail addresses. They use a city such as APO or FPO and a state code such as AE, AP, or AA. The format is not a normal US street address.

The structure

Use the service member’s name, unit and box number, APO or FPO, the state code AE, AP, or AA, and the ZIP code. Do not replace APO/FPO with a city name.

What not to change

Do not “correct” the state to a US state or add a country. Military mail has its own routing. If a form rejects APO/FPO, use the provider’s military-address path instead of forcing a domestic address.

Shipping restrictions

Some items cannot be shipped to military addresses, and delivery times vary. Check the carrier’s restrictions before you promise a delivery date.

Questions

Is APO a city?+
It is a military mail designation used in the city field. Do not replace it with a civilian city.
Which state code do I use?+
Use the AE, AP, or AA code that matches the unit’s routing, not the service member’s home state.

Examples are synthetic. Do not use a generated address for identity checks, account registration, or delivery.
