RFC 9562 · v4 random · v7 sortable

UUID Generator

Create identifiers for databases, API fixtures, and test data. UUID v4 is fully random; UUID v7 starts with a millisecond timestamp so records sort by creation time.

v4 is random; v7 carries a millisecond timestamp for sortable IDs.

Version and variant bits set

Every value carries the correct version nibble and RFC variant bits, so validators accept v4 and v7 output without repair.

Sortable option when you need it

v7 embeds a millisecond timestamp, which keeps index inserts local instead of scattering them across the B-tree.

UUID Generator questions

Should I use v4 or v7?+
Use v7 when the identifier will be a primary key or index and you want inserts to stay roughly time-ordered. Use v4 when ordering must not leak creation time.
Is a generated UUID guaranteed unique?+
Practically yes for v4 at 122 random bits, but this is a statistical property, not a registry check. The page cannot detect a value already used elsewhere.
What does v7 encode?+
The first 48 bits hold a Unix millisecond timestamp, then version and variant bits, then random data. Two v7 values created in the same millisecond sort randomly against each other.
Does the browser block this?+
No. Values come from the Web Crypto API. Older browsers without crypto.getRandomValues are not supported because a Math.random fallback would weaken the identifier.
Are braces or uppercase valid?+
Both are presentation options. The canonical RFC 9562 text form is lowercase with hyphens and no braces; use the variants only when a system requires them.
